Healing Hands, Humble Hearts: The Charaka Award 2026

On April 1st, 2026, the Rotary Club of Guindy (RCG) transformed the Hyatt Regency, Chennai, into a sanctuary of gratitude and inspiration for the Charaka Award 2026. This award, a salutation to the "Gods' own representatives" in medicine, honours the legacy of Charaka—the pioneer of holistic healing. The evening was a masterclass in fellowship and excellence, seamlessly blending professional recognition with deep societal purpose.

A Masterful Choice: The Worthiness of Dr. S. Rajasekaran

The core objective of the award—to honour extraordinary medical research and service—was met with unparalleled precision by selecting Dr. S. Rajasekaran, Chairman of Ganga Hospital. His worthiness was vividly illustrated through his presentation, which showcased the pioneering partnership between himself and his brother (an eminent plastic surgeon).

Audience members were visibly moved by cinematic case studies of trauma recovery, reflecting the four pillars of his institution: innovation, research, compassionate care, and excellence. Beyond clinical genius, his selection was a tribute to his humility—evidenced by his heartfelt appreciation for his family's support—and his commitment to affordable, high-quality care.

A Landmark Victory for Humanity: The PIL

Dr. Rajasekaran’s worthiness extends into the highest corridors of justice. A defining highlight of his career is the Public Interest Litigation (PIL) he filed in the Honourable Supreme Court of India. This courageous effort to safeguard trauma victims resulted in a monumental transformation of national policy, governance structures, and safety processes, ensuring a safer future for every citizen across the country.

A Guest of Honour: Mr. K. Annamalai’s Brilliance and Humility

The presence of Mr. K. Annamalai, Ex-IPS, as the Chief Guest added profound intellectual weight to the occasion. His attendance was a testament to the persistence and vision of RCG President Rtn. Radha Krish, who ensured his presence despite the demanding election season.

Mr. Annamalai’s address—described as "20 minutes of sheer brilliance" was deeply personal. He shared how Ganga Hospital had influenced his own life from childhood through his service as an IPS officer. He emphasized that awards like the Charaka Award do not merely honour an individual; they inspire society by encouraging others to reflect on their own potential for service. His humility was legendary; he not only requested a copy of the event's cinematic AV presentations for himself but also made a personal call to the President the following morning to describe the event as "fantastic and well-organised".

The RCG "Emotion": A Role Model Display

The event was a triumph of RCG’s collective spirit, or what members call the "RCG Emotion". The "role model" execution included:

  1. Creative Excellence: "Cinematic" AV presentations curated by Rtn. Rafeek and a "beautifully crafted" citation read by Ann. Girija.
  2. Operational Mastery: Seamless coordination by the organizing team under the Chairmanship of PP Rtn Venugopal and, hospitality that managed double the expected crowd at the popular live dosa counter.
  3. Presence and Impact: The event drew 167 participants and a phalanx of 20 press cameras, signifying RCG's standing in the community.

The evening concluded with a lively session of photographs and smiles, reaffirming that when RCG honours excellence, it doesn't just hold a meeting—it creates a lasting legacy of inspiration for the entire community.
